I recently was tasked with giving a presentation on Powerful Questions at work. Every month, we have coach training meetings and discuss important topics that impact our field. Powerful Questions is not only a core competency of the International Coaching Federation, but probably one of the top 3 most important pieces to life coaching in general.
Through research, training and extensive psychotherapy, I've been lucky to have been hit right smack in the face (like an uppercut... but a gentle one #ifthatspossible) with questions that have helped me change my life and grow as a professional, a leader, a friend, a girlfriend, a daughter... and as a human overall. I want to share some of those questions with you today.
Without further ado, here are 10 questions that will change your life.
Questions for Debunking Your Fear
In order to grow as a human, as a professional, as a leader, and in life in general we must face one major thing...FEAR. Brené Brown talks at length about how we live in a culture where fear steers our life and in order to be who we're meant to be (our most authentic self) we MUST face our fears. Here's some questions that can help.
What's worth doing even if I fail?
If I wasn't scared, what would I do?
What am I pretending not to know?
What am I resisting?
Questions for Your Dreams and Schemes
Sometimes we need to allow ourselves to dream big and imagine what our future could look like. Creating actual images is a powerful tool to help you grow and develop into who you want to become. Give yourself the permission to dream a little for the next few moments and answer these questions.
If I could wave a magic wand and create my ideal situation, what would that look like?
What would it take to get to my ideal scenario?
What experiences do I want to create?
Questions for Y O U
Many times, we're others-focused... and trust me, if anyone has had an other-focused habit it's me. In order to grow, we must focus on what we can do as other people are not our responsibility, #boundaries. Below are some helpful questions to put this into practice.
How do I want to be remembered?
What will I commit to doing differently the next time this situation occurs?
Am I asking the right questions?
Challenging, right? Don't worry, they're meant to be.
My coworker and friend, a beautiful woman, teacher, and mother, had an Abraham Maslow quote on her door at work. She brought it to my attention after our meeting and it hit me like the smell of pizza on a Friday night (or the smell of pizza any day, really).
If you deliberately plan on being less than you are capable of being, then I warn you that you'll be unhappy for the rest of your life. - Abraham Maslow
Asking yourself these questions is H A R D and being honest with yourself about the answers is even more difficult. However, I don't think anyone wants to feel or mediocre -- probably because none of us are inherently made that way. You were made for amazing, amazing things and to not allow yourself to feel and become who you want to be is cutting yourself all the way short.
Grow and flourish into whoever you want to become -- get deep with yourself; I promise it will be worth it.
